Pitman, NJ, October 24, 2013 - Nationally known nurse leader Cynthia Nowicki Hnatiuk, EdD, RN, CAE, FAAN, of Westampton, NJ, recently received one of the highest honors in nursing with her induction as a Fellow by the American Academy of Nursing.

Dr. Hnatiuk, who is an executive, educator, and author, was one of 172 nurses inducted on October 19 during the Academy’s 40th Annual Meeting in Washington, DC. Only the country’s top nurse leaders are chosen for the fellowship, which signifies an individual has made outstanding contributions to nursing and health care.

Having mentored more than 200 leaders over the course of 25 years, Dr. Hnatiuk is known for inspiring nurses to take the helm of some of America’s most influential nursing organizations. One of her most notable achievements is her book, Mentoring the Stars: A Program for Volunteer Board Leaders, a seminal publication that has helped groom successful nursing decision-makers.

Dr. Hnatiuk is currently vice president for organizational development at Anthony J. Jannetti, Inc. (AJJ), in Pitman, NJ, an association management company that specializes in managing professional nursing organizations. At AJJ, Dr. Hnatiuk is the executive director of the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses, the American Academy of Ambulatory Care Nursing, and the Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification Board. She oversees operations and supervises all staff functions for these organizations.

“I’ve watched Dr. Hnatiuk take nurse colleagues under her wing and help them become confident and effective leaders time and again,” said Anthony Jannetti, AJJ’s CEO. “She’s a great mentor because she has vision, intelligence, and warmth. We are very proud that she has been named an Academy Fellow."

During her career, Dr. Hnatiuk has worked on a national level to promote the value of nursing certification and its benefits to nurses, facilities, and patients. She has also helped AJJ’s specialty nursing associations innovate services, expand education, and increase membership. She was instrumental in the merging of two national organizations into what is known today as the Nursing Organizations Alliance (NOA), a collaborative of more than 60 nursing associations advancing the profession.

Dr. Hnatiuk is a member of the American Society of Association Executives and is a Certified Association Executive (CAE). She is past president of the American Society of Plastic Surgical Nurses and the Plastic Surgical Nursing Certification Board. She currently serves as the Awards Committee chairperson for the American Board of Nursing Specialties (ABNS) and is a member of the manuscript review panel for the Journal of Continuing Education in Nursing.

She obtained her doctorate in adult education from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, FL. She received her master’s degree in nursing from the Medical College of Ohio and her bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Toledo.

Selection criteria as an Academy Fellow include evidence of significant contributions to nursing and health care and sponsorship by two current Academy Fellows. Dr. Hnatiuk was sponsored by Linda H. Yoder, PhD, MBA, RN, OCN, FAAN, and Jo Manion, PhD, RN, FAAN. Applicants are reviewed by a panel comprised of elected and appointed Fellows and selection is based, in part, on the extent the nominee’s nursing career influenced health policies and the health and wellbeing of all. Once inducted, Fellows are designated by the credentials FAAN (Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing).
